MERCEDES D IIIA

Lohner-Porsche
Modell 27
Ferdinand Porsche joined Lohner in 1899 and developed the “System Lohner Porsche” electric car there. The Lohner Porsche Model 27, which was very similar in design to a Lohner carriage, with its typically large rear wheels and wooden spokes, was built in 1900 at the imperial and royal court carriage factory Jacob Lohner in Donaufelderstraße in Vienna and presented at the Paris World Exhibition in the same year. It was powered by two wheel hub electric motors mounted on the front axle.
Based on the only surviving model of this car, which is on display at the Vienna Technical Museum, a faithful replica of the car presented at the World's Fair was built. The aim was to produce a replica that was authentic in terms of form, design, function, and technology. The existing basis for this was sparse, as the car in the Technical Museum is no longer equipped with the original motors and no longer has any electrical or control technology. The front axle also no longer corresponds to the 1900 prototype.
With the help of a few photos and knowledge of the controls used in later models, it was possible to reconstruct the wheel hub motors and control technology. To build the body, the car in the Technical Museum was measured using photogrammetry and the corresponding plans were drawn up. The technology and materials used in the car are completely faithful to the historical model.
The only roadworthy Lohner-Porsche Model 27 can now be viewed at the Ferdinand Porsche Erlebniswelten fahr(T)raum and can also be seen on the road at selected events.
